Artists with Heart FundraiserArtists with Heart began in 2002 with the goal of selling art to raise money for community causes. Initially, founder Tansy Mattingly was planning to sell her own art exclusively. However, the idea proved contagious and that first year 55 artists were represented at a sale in an empty storefront on Shattuck Avenue. Over $7000 was raised and donated to BOSS (Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency), the most comprehensive long-term resource for homeless people seeking help in the East Bay. Artists With Heart made a provision that a percentage of the funds be used for parent education, a service later provided by the Parent Leadership Institute under the direction of Patty Wipfler. The following year the event was repeated, this time held in space donated by Susie Medak, managing director of the Berkeley Repertory Theater. Again, approximately $7000 was raised in the two-weekend long sale, and BOSS was again determined to be the worthy recipient of the funds. Plans are now underway for an event we hope will raise more funds than both previous sales combined. A team of committed volunteers is planning to host a gala dinner and silent auction of donated art pieces, to be held the evening of March 30, 2006. BOSS will again receive funds, this time to benefit its new Ursula Sherman Village in Berkeley. Click here to read the announcement of the event to help BOSS or to donate to the cause.
