Suspect Sought in Transient's Killing

by Henry K. Lee

Berkeley police are offering a $15,000 reward for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of a second assailant in the beating death of a homeless woman.

Jarell Maurice Johnson, 18, kicked and stomped Mary Katherine King, 45, shortly before 1 a.m. Feb. 8 near University Avenue and California Street during an argument over "Dumpster diving," authorities said. King died Feb. 20 at Highland Hospital in Oakland.

Berkeley police arrested Johnson moments after the assault. Investigators found blood on his shoe and he "admitted just kicking a woman nearby while gesturing toward the crime scene," police said in court records.

Police arrested two other suspects, but they haven't been charged. Investigators are now seeking a fourth person believed to have been involved in the attack, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call (510) 981- 5741.
