Stealing From The Poor: The Section 8 Scandal -
On July 20, 2004 people organized by the
Campaign for Renters Rights held a victory rally outside Alameda City Hall
after Alameda Housing Authority Director Michael Pucci managed to persuade
HUD to fork over $630,000 that it owed to restore funding for 108 families
that had their housing vouchers terminated due to the Section 8 crisis
created by HUD.

Habitat's Build-A-Thon - Walk-a-thons,
bike-a-thons and the like have become popular participatory activities for
raising funds and public awareness to deal with important social issues.
An interesting variation on that theme is East Bay Habitat for Humanity's
annual Build-A-Thon.
The Murder of a
Homeless Man in Oakland - The
savage and senseless torture and murder of a homeless man in Oakland by a
group of young men on July 18 is a warning sign of the grave dangers
homeless people face due to a rising wave of shocking hate crimes.
